It all started with the Minimalist documentary on Netflix….
I feel like most minimalist journeys start here haha. Anyway, I watched the documentary and everything just clicked. I have way too much stuff that I do not need! The next day I gave away three shopping bags worth of makeup I had collected over the years, ten trash bags worth of clothes and three trash bags worth of random things in my room.
I’m a minimalist now, I guess. Not the kind that could fit all their belongings in a backpack. I am my own definition of minimalism. I used to mindlessly collect items. Now, I am more thoughtful about what I hold onto. I focus on surrounding myself with the things that bring me joy and to only accumulate the items I need to live, love and thrive. I aim to find most of my happiness not in items but in friends, family, experiences and accomplishments.
I went from overflowing closets, dressers and clothing storage units to only 50 items of clothing for all four seasons. Desk draws and multiple storage bins full of makeup to a small two draw acrylic makeup case. A draw full of office supplies to two black pens, two blue pens, six markers and one notebook. This is not to say I will never buy clothes, makeup or pens every again. Come on now y’all, that’s just not realistic! Instead before mindlessly purchasing, I will be asking myself, do I really need/want this? Do I have something similar? Do I love this?
How does my minimalist lifestyle apply to my tech stash? You guys know I’m a huge techie! Pretty much the same! If I don’t love it or if it doesn’t add value to my life, I’m not holding on to it. Of course my tech collection will be larger than most people’s because I love tech it brings me joy and I’m a tech professional. It’s my job to try out tech! It’s like expecting a beauty guru to only have one red lipstick. Unrealistic! But I still vow to be honest with myself and to keep my tech collection in check.
I’m also allowing myself to be flexible and to give myself permission to evolve. Maybe this year it makes sense for me to only have seven pairs of pants but next year I need 14. Or maybe I don’t need any drones right now but next year I might need twelve. That’s all good! I aim to hold on to only the things that I need and that truly add value to my life.
Well the secret is out, I’m a minimalist… well my own kind of minimalist and it feels really good.
